For many years, menopause was a topic not to be mentioned – something to just “put up with”. Finally, the stigma is reducing and we are beginning to talk about menopause. This (hopefully) means that women can get the support they need!

Perimenopause is the period leading up to a woman’s final menstrual period. This typically begins when a woman is in her 40s and, on average, lasts around four to six years. During perimenopause, periods often become irregular. The duration and amount of bleeding can also change.

Menopause is a woman’s final menstrual period. In Australia, menopause generally occurs between 45 and 55 years of age, with the average age being 51. If a woman around this age hasn’t had a period for 12 months, it is very likely that she has gone through menopause. Some women will go through menopause earlier – termed “early” or “premature” menopause, depending on their age.
Why does it occur?
During perimenopause, women have fewer eggs in the ovaries and do not ovulate regularly. Oestrogen levels fluctuate a lot and, as menopause approaches, levels drop by up to 90%. Progesterone and testosterone levels also decrease. These hormonal changes are responsible for the symptoms that women experience.
What symptoms do women get around menopause?
Symptoms usually start during perimenopause. Many people think it’s all about “hot flushes”, but women may experience numerous physical and emotional symptoms. These can include:
-
Mood changes
-
Brain fog
-
Poor sleep
-
Vaginal dryness/discomfort
-
Painful sex
-
Headaches
-
Joint pains
-
…and, unfortunately, many more!
The good news is that help is available. Your GP can provide you with advice and treatment options. If your symptoms are affecting your daily life, or you are concerned about your periods, make sure to see a doctor. Menopause is also often a good time to have a general health check to keep you as healthy as possible, and I would encourage all women to touch base with their GP around this time.
